Scrolling, Saving, Cooking

Have you ever picked up a skill from social media that really stayed with you? For me, it was cooking.
I’ve found lots of recipes from different cultures just by scrolling through TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube. At first, I was only watching quick videos, but soon I started trying out the recipes, saving them, and building my own collection of favorite meals.

🍜 What Made It Stick

  • Short, visual formats made it easy to follow: Watching someone cook step-by-step in real time (or sped up) made recipes feel way less intimidating than reading a long list of instructions.
  • It felt quick and doable: A 30 - 60 second video made me think, “Okay, I can try that,” instead of overthinking it.
  • The visuals helped me understand, not just follow: Seeing textures, colors, and timing helped, especially for recipes from cultures I wasn’t familiar with.
  • I could save and come back anytime: Being able to bookmark or pin recipes made it easy to build a personal “recipe library.”
  • There was room to ask questions: Whether through comments or DMs, I could actually interact with the person who posted.
  • It felt personal and relatable: A lot of creators share tips, mistakes, or shortcuts, which made me feel more confident trying things myself.
Learning on social media might not seem formal, but it can still be valuable. The casual and engaging style makes it easier to connect with and remember new information.

Curious: What skill did you accidentally learn because you were “just scrolling”?
